Frequently Asked Questions

What is balanced training?

Balanced dog training is a method that uses all four quadrants of operant conditioning to shape a dog’s behavior. These quadrants are positive reinforcement, negative reinforcement, positive punishment and negative punishment.

In balanced training, the focus is on teaching desired behaviors through positive reinforcement. However, if a dog clearly understands a behavior and disregards, appropriate and fair corrections (from the other quadrants) may be used to communicate boundaries and accountability. The goal is always to be clear, humane, and consistent while building a strong relationship based on trust and respect.

What is a prong collar and why is it used?

A prong collar is a training tool that provides communication and correction for the dog. A prong collar is the same amount of correction as a mother dog correcting her puppy’s by using a nip on the pup’s neck. Prong collars are used as a communication tool to the dog to shape the dog’s behavior.

What is an e-collar and why is it used?

An electric collar, also known as e-collar and remote collar, is used as both a communication tool for the dog and also allows the dog to have ample freedom while allowing you to still maintain control. Often times, we use e-collars to allow the dogs to be off-leash and still have reliable recall!

Why training tools?

Training tools are a powerful and essential part of balanced dog training when used thoughtfully and responsibly. They are not about punishment—they are about communication. Just like we use language to guide one another, training tools provide a way to clearly and fairly communicate boundaries and expectations to our dogs. When properly introduced and paired with positive reinforcement, these tools help dogs better understand what is being asked of them, which in turn builds confidence, strengthens trust, and opens the door to more freedom. These tools, combined with consistency, praise, and patience, help dogs become calmer, more reliable, and able to enjoy more off-leash experiences safely. The goal of balanced training is not control—it’s communication and clarity. It’s about giving dogs the structure they crave and the freedom they deserve.
